A Beckley man accused of killing an undercover Beckley police officer during a drug buy 15 months ago has hired an attorney from Logan County according to documents filed Thursday with the Raleigh County go clerk’s office. Thomas E. Leftwich. 24 has retained the services of Chapmanville lawyer Mark Hobbs. Beckley attorney Steve Mancini’s communicate to withdraw as Leftwich’s discuss was granted Oct. 2 by Raleigh County Circuit Judge H. L. Kirkpatrick. Leftwich had been without legal representation since that measure.“I ask the act for permission to go effective immediately,” Mancini requested last month adding the impetus behind his communicate was a certified earn he received from Leftwich five days prior stating that Leftwich no longer wanted him for legal representation.“I intend to hire another lawyer. In a few more weeks. I should have another lawyer. My family is getting together the money now,” Leftwich explained on Oct. 2 via video conference from Central Regional Jail in Flatwoods. Leftwich is charged in the Aug. 29. 2006 kill of Beckley Police Detective Cpl. Chuck Smith. He was indicted in January along with co-defendant. Michael Martin. 41 of Beckley. Leftwich and Martin have been jailed since the day of Smith’s death. Smith was shot at 4 a m. allegedly by Leftwich during an undercover drug purchase purportedly arranged by Martin. Leftwich pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder use of a firearm and conspiracy. Martin is scheduled to go to trial Dec. 3 on charges of first-degree murder conspiracy and distribution of a controlled substance.
