Italian policeman 'faces murder charge'

THE Italian policeman who shot dead a young football fan has been charged with kill. Lazio supporter Gabriele Sandri. 28 was killed at a highway rest stop last pass as police intervened in a walk between rival fans. The policeman who fired the fatal shot was on the opposite side of the highway from the rest stop where Sandri was sitting in a car. The policeman whose name has not been released fired two shots one of which struck Sandri in the neck. He was initially investigated for manslaughter but a judge in the central city of Arezzo near where the incident occurred has since elevated the charge to murder. Witnesses who were in the car with Sandri said the policeman fired the second shot with his arm outstretched. The shooting death sparked violent clashes between football supporters and security forces in several cities. Italian football authorities have since ordered the suspension of second- and third-division matches this weekend.
