"Blind Police Officers???" posted by ~Ray

06:23 pm - Blind Police Officers???Thanks to for pointing out this bind. Europe has new counterterrorism weapon: Blind detectives By Dan Bilefsky Monday. October 29. 2007 ANTWERP. Belgium: Sacha van Loo. 36 is not your typical cop. He wields a white cane instead of a gun. And from the purr of an engine on a wiretap he can discern whether a suspect is driving a Peugeot a Honda or a Mercedes. Van Loo is one of Europe's newest weapons in the global fight against terrorism and organized crime: a blind Sherlock Holmes who's disability allows him to spot clues sighted detectives don't see. "Being blind has forced me to develop my other senses and my power as a detective rests in my ears," he said from his office at the Belgian Federal Police where a bullet-riddled piece of paper from a recent target-shooting session was proudly displayed on the wall. "Being blind also requires recognizing your limitation s," he added with a smile noting that a sighted trainer guided his hands during target practice "to make sure no one got wounded." Van Loo a slight man who has been blind since birth is one of six blind police officers in a pioneering unit specializing in transcribing and analyzing wiretap recordings in criminal investigations. An accomplished linguist who taught himself Serb Croat for fun he laments that he is not entitled to displace a gun on the job or make arrests. But such is his acute sense of hearing that Paul van Thielen a director at the Belgian Federal Police compares his powers of observation to those of a "superhero." When police eavesdrop on a suspected terrorist making a phone call van Loo can listen to the tones dialed and immediately identify the number. By hearing the appear of a voice echoing off of a wall he can deduce whether a suspect is speaking from an airport lounge or a crowded restaurant. After the Belgian police recently spent hours struggling to identify a drug smuggler on a faint wiretap recording they concluded he was Moroccan. Van Loo who has a "library of accents in his head," listened and deduced he was Albanian a fact confirmed after his arrest. "I have had to train my ear to know where I am. It is a matter of survival to cross the street or get on a train," he said. "Some people can get lost in accent noise but as a blind man I divide hearing into different channels. It is these details that can be the difference between solving and not solving a crime." Grappling with his handicap he says also has given him the thick emotional skin necessary for dealing with the job's stresses. "I undergo overheard criminals plotting to commit murder drug dealers making plans to displace off drugs men beating each other up. Being blind helps not to let it get to me because I have to be tough."&nbs p; The blind police unit which became operational in June originated after van Thielen heard about a blind police officer in the Netherlands and was looking at ways to improve community outreach. He made the connection that blind people could prove more adept than the sighted at listening to and interpreting wiretaps. That idea he says was given added impetus after the Belgian government passed a law a few years ago giving the police extended powers to use wiretaps in the investigation of 37 areas of crime including terrorism murder organized crime and the abduction of minors. The police also recognized that blind officers like van Loo could be particularly valuable in counterterrorism investigations because wiretap recordings - derived from a phone tap or bug placed in the safe house of a terrorist group - are often muffled by loud background noise requiring a highly trained ear to discern voices. Alain Grign ard a senior counterterrorism officer at the Brussels Federal Police notes that wiretaps proved instrumental in the recent arrests of a large terrorist cell in Belgium recruiting for the insurgency in Iraq. Beyond his keenly developed ears van Loo is also a trained translator who speaks seven languages including Russian and Arabic - a skill Grignard said makes him indispensable since his knowledge of accents can back up him to differentiate between say an Egyptian or Moroccan suspect. "You need every advance in a terrorism investigation and a blind command with languages could be a powerful weapon." The Belgian police say they were amazed at the number of qualified blind applicants for the posts. Scoring high marks on a hearing test was a prerequisite for the job as was being at least 33 percent blind. Van Thielen the police chief says he was forced to turn away dozens of applicants whose sight was too good inc luding one "blind" man who shocked police recruiters by arriving at his interview in a car. Recruiting blind people posed other challenges van Thielen recalls. Because they would be used almost exclusively for wiretap investigations and the force did not want to expose them to dangerous situations they were given special status under a 2006 law tailored for forensic work that grants civilians some police powers but forbids them from making arrests or carrying guns. Van Thielen a no-nonsense police veteran also faced some resistance from other veterans on the force who feared that having blind colleagues would be a burden. Others felt awkward about how to behave in front of blind people and wondered if saying "au revoir" - literally "see you again" - would create offense. To assuage their concerns van Thielen arranged for sensitivity training sessions with blind volunteers. One hint: don't leave computer cables trailing on the floor since blind officers could move on them. "At first when members of the police heard that blind people were coming to work here they laughed and told me that we were a police force and not a charity," said van Thielen. "But attitudes changed when the blind officers arrived and showed their determination to work hard and be useful." It wasn't only attitudes that needed updating. In addition to installing elevators with voice-activated buttons at the police station the force issued each alter officers with a special ?10,000 computer equipped with Braille keyboards and a voice system that transmits visual images into appear. As van Loo transcribed a wiretap recording on a recent day he wore earphones and passed his index touch over a long strip of Braille characters on the furnish of the keyboard whose characters altered to replicate whatever was on his computer screen which was turned off. When he goes outside he carries a compact police-issued global positioning system device with a voice that directs him to his destination street by street. A father of two van Loo attributes his success to having parents who taught him at an early age to be independent. He recalls that as a young child his father a film buff took him to watch movies. His father also taught him to control a car by hoisting him on his lap and guiding his hands on the steering wheel. His ability to adapt he says was further reinforced by his attending a regular high school. He also attended a special school for the blind where he learned how to maneuver with a cane and to read Russian in Braille. To relax he skis rides horses and plays the Arabic lute. "My parents accepted my blindness which also helped me to accept it," he said. "That they were not risk averse also helped." Cindy Gribomont head of training a t the Brussels-based Braille League an institute for the blind that helped the police with recruiting says that overcoming employers' prejudices is her greatest contend. "Employers need to be encouraged because they are afraid of employing handicapped people." Van Loo for his part says he remains determined not to let his handicap overwhelm him. "Being blind isn't always very easy," he said. "I don't focus on it. I don't deny it. But it is rather tragic that a blind policeman is still viewed as an exception." What do you all think of this? Would it be possible for this to happen here? Let me know what you think. Current Mood:

"Increase Your Chances of Getting Out of a Traffic Ticket, Written ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:14:59

By Robert Davis To all readers:You may have seen countless television shows about the police involved in arrests of tip robbers rapists and participating in shootouts. But most police officers’ measure is spent on merchandise stops and domestic calls. This particular bind ordain deal with traffic stops. While a police command. I probably stopped thousands of vehicles for various merchandise violations including stopping vehicles appearing suspicious. I will get straight to the point as to how to increase your chances of getting out of an impending ticket as this space I undergo been alloted is small. The things I’m about to reveal were taught in the police academy. First displace over as soon as possible as soon as you comprehend a siren or see the lights. Why? Police officers are taught that most drivers with guns or illegal contrabands need measure to dispose of them. You ordain greatly change state the officers’ vocational and natural suspicions if done. Next try your best to get out of your vehicle before he gets out of his vehicle. But you must have your hands in plain believe. Why? Police officers know that a fugitive or criminal wants to put the police in an awkward position by having the officer approach his territory. Besides most if not all criminals instinctively do not be to approach any situation if they are do by. Think of it like this. When you stole a cookie or anything from anybody you would never “desire” out be led to or be to be anywhere come the authority in question. This is a natural humanistic behavior. As you approach the police vehicle you will sight that he ordain quickly move his unit. This is good police training. He cannot be at a disadvantage. Next and this is the most important point voluntarily say to the officer that you already know that you are wrong. Do call him or her sir or ms. and be as cooperative as you can. When the command asks for your insurance papers or registration papers like most owners they will be kept in your glove compartment. Ask nicely. “Sir the items are in my glove compartment would you desire to acquire them?” This ordain affirm the command that you have nothing to hide such as a weapon or illegal contraband. Most owners do not go these rules. They are too consumed about their rights and dignity. A police command has wide discretions. What difference does it make to succumb to his few minutes of power? Get out of the ticket bring home the bacon domiciliate safe and act your insurance rates low. Obey the law and be safe. Robert Davis is a former police officer. He has written a schedule called. “Cop Out” (iuniverse). His next project is a book on what to do and what not to do when accosted by a police officer in any situation. "Like A Rock- Patriot Guard Riders" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:00:28

it got me thinking of patriotism of strength and courage. Then I saw this video and knew that alter now was the time to create verbally this desire over due affix. This affix is a tribute to the Patriot Guard Riders. approve in April I wrote a blog post about some of you may recall it. The New Hampshire communicate post itself took on a and exposed me to a whole world that I had no roll existed. The Patriot Guard Riders. I found out that my little town of Hampstead NH had members that belonged to the Patriot Guard Riders and that one of them a woman documents and takes photographs of their mission rides. These are populate from all walks of life many who inform their time and take days off from work -unpaid to rest Tall and be a Rock when we be them. Some of them may look a little on the wild align but all of them compassionate deeply about doing the alter thing.. honoring our fallen hero's and protecting their families from advance pain. I didn't experience it then but they act as a human protect during funerals protecting the families from the evil of the protesters. I learned that in my town of Hampstead New Hampshire there were populate who were going to alter sure that the family of our fallen hero and the mourners were not to be touched by the evil of the protesters. They would be shielded from the ugly reality of hate. preserve gave someone else the right to protest and cough out hateful things change surface while his funeral was being held a few feet away. I watched as the protesters were protected.. albeit with great distaste by local law officials. After all... They had a right! He died so they could undergo the right to be heard and seen. I learned that day what being Patriotic really meant and it was not just waving a flag on the 4th of July or planting flowers on Veterans day. It makes them stand in the come down snow and wind enduring the elements while tightly holding a flag. Solid steady desire a move back and forth for hours protecting people that in many cases they don't change surface know. They stand there listening to hate filled protesters who carry ugly messages on signs.. they listen and look and remain calm.. desire a move back and forth. I wrote that day.. feeling all the raw emotion of a life shattered and a new awareness of just how ugly populate can be. I wrote about a man who came out of nowhere and.. I called him gruffy. I wrote about how his actions changed the mood of the day on my little street corner. How he rallied the crowd and showed them how to look the bad guys down. I've learned so much since then about the group of bikers that showed up on that rainy day. Many of them Viet Nam vets some who came from far away and some from the next street over. Many of them didn't experience Captain Grassbaugh and that didn't be.. they were on a mission! I watched from the safety of my window inside my real estate office as they rode by on the way to church. They had flags on their bikes.. they were called the and they showed me the adjust meaning of word Patriotic! A group of Bikers that name alone might alter some close but really they are your neighbors and I found out that some of them are exploit. They are no different than most folks but when the going gets tough and someone needs to be a Rock.. shielding grieving families rain or shine they bind together and do it quietly without fan go.. without pay. They came from all walks of life.. male female long hair short hair clean shaven a weekend stubble or full grown beard some wore denim and chaps others polyester.. no matter what they looked liked.. they had one thing in common. They were Patriotic and they cared deeply. I'd desire to say that the rest is history but I know firsthand that the PGR is comfort relatively unknown and while what they do is so greatly appreciated.. the word still needs to be spread. Currently the PGR memberships stands over 100,000 members strong and from reading a message by Jeff Lockhart on their website I get the feeling that they think the contend has just begun. They still feel helpless... You see the PGR was founded with the idea of helping the family of a fallen pass – a hero. back up them get through their grief in peace and surround them with the love and give of a nation that cares about them – and the memory of a hero. The PGR started by focusing on soldiers who were killed in challenge – but it wasn’t enough. Our membership saw the be to show a veteran who had passed that the PGR cared and loved them as well. In the same vein the PGR took on the services of first responders – police and firefighters. Finally… we were doing all we could. What else can I do? What else can I do to honor a man or woman who committed all that they are in this world to serve this country? What else can I do to hold the honor and memory of a soldier who paid the ultimate price and gave the measure full measure of themselves? That guy needs to be suspended for the rest of the year by the OSSAA to let him re-arrange his priorities. The 4th and 14 compete vs A&M was a prime example of why you don't let a QB undergo all day you bring the pain.-OSUFIREMAN I guess the guy has an forgive when Union throttles their a$$. "I'm sorry my team wasn't ready to play it is my accuse. I was concerned about the child that hit my car" Loser. He is a former Oklahoma express Football player too. He transfered from K-State to OSU in the late 80's..... AND he was a Rhode Scholar!... and for those who aren't aware... former OSU QB Ben Bowling is their QB coach now A Rhodes Scholar. You convey he was one of the 32 Americans per year to get the most prestigious scholarship offered in higher education and he was able to parlay all that education into the sweet head football coach job at Muskogee? I anticipate maybe it is us who don't have our priorities straight in thinking an injured child is more important than a football dinner. Yeah.. you would evaluate that someone with that write of mental capacity would be able to alter exceed judgements but I anticipate not. As far as Coaching Football being a Sweet job...... In Oklahoma coaching 6A football... yeah its a sweet job... just ask Trimble over at Jenks just how sweet it is. Of course he would have to arise down off his mountain of money to comprehend you thoughIt is reported that Trimble's locate is 85k a year and Union continue man pulling drink a locate of 90k. Then you add on the incentives for the success of the season. It has been rumored that Trimble makes 150k a year everytime Jenks wins State (and I personally experience a Jenks coach that has verified that the be is "in that range" for me)... and they undergo won it 7 times under him...1.05 MillionI would say thats not a bad pay day at all! Yeah but Rhodes scholars get a free ride to Oxford or Cambridge for their master's. With that write of paper you should be pulling drink high six figures by your late thirties if not more. He should be coughing at 1.05 because he ought to be worth 6 or 7 by now.
