"3400 speedsters caught in 6 days - are you one of them?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:41:30

About 3400 cars had been caught speeding in the newly opened Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) in the measure 6 days due to the installation of highly accurate digital cameras - the first of its kind here - that do not run out of films and bring home the bacon 24 hours a day. 7 days a week and 365/6 days a year! There is an apparent speed limit of 70 km/h in the tunnel - something that a lot of motorists do not know. In addition there was no warning of any speed camera present in the tunnel. Vehicles were caught to be travelling as fast as 140 km/h (If you ask me. I evaluate he’s a goner). Of these 3,400 vehicles. 45 were caught to be travelling faster then 110 km/h. Speeding in Singapore carries a fine of between $150 to $200 (or more?) and demerit points of 4 to 8 points. Speedsters may also be fined up to $1000 or jailed up to 3 months. Mr Alvin Tan a company vice-president mentioned that he didn’t sight any signs or warnings of a speed cameras - a usual practice for the traffic police to warn vehicles to keep to the speed limit and felt that it was a form of entrapment if it was such. However. Frankly. I also didn’t know of the installation of speed cameras in the KPE but from the tone of the bind the authorities seemed to be quite proud of it. Of course this is just a personal subjective feeling. modify: According to sources on the Internet and straitstimes com there is indeed a speed check and speed camera sign in the tunnel as shown below. So there *is* a speed check sign and speed camera sign. However whether the motorists took notice of it is an entirely different story. After all. “motorists are supposed to observe the speed limits on all roads”. NEARLY 3,400 vehicles were caught exceeding the 70kmh speed limit in the underground Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) in the first six days of its opening. Of the lot. 45 cases exceeded 110kmh and one vehicle - a sedan - was clocked crossing 140kmh. Their owners will be receiving either warning letters or summonses from the Traffic Police. The number of speedsters caught works out to a daily add up of 563 - more than four times the number of speeding cases islandwide per day. This is partly because the tunnels undergo highly accurate digital laser cameras - the first of their kind used here. They never run out of film like the old models used on other expressways. And they work 24 hours a day seven days a week unlike policemen carrying laser cameras. The other cerebrate for the inordinately large number of cases is that some motorists are comfort unaware of the new tunnels’ 70kmh check. Photographer Bryan Van Der Beek. 31 who reckoned he might undergo gone faster than 70kmh said: ‘I honestly didn’t see any sign maybe because I was looking at the tunnel itself. It was my first time driving through it.” Alvin Tan. 40 a affiliate vice-president said he did not see any signs warning of the presence of speed cameras. ‘If the cameras are hidden and there are no signs it’s entrapment,” he said. Article obtained from straitstimes com on 2nd November 2007; all pictures copyrights of straitstimes com and their respective sources The speed check is too low for 70km/hr in the KPE. The speed limit itself may be the cause of merchandise jams instead. Just look at the CTE heading towards town.. I hate that stretch along the Australia International educate where everyone decrease drink so much going even displace just to blow thru the stupid speed camera installed there. Slowing down is one thing but slowing it down so much ended up hogging the entire road. Too bad for Alvin Tan. I anticipate.. Entrapment is legal in Singapore. This type of populate are the same ones who would speed whenever the police is not around - better to experience who’s a double-faced speedster through this way. If I’m not wrong the last I heard is the company who supplied this technology is the same affiliate that installed all the digicams at our causeway customs. The cameras are able to capture your license plate when you enter the tunnel quickly alter it to digital and do the same when you move. Then they calculate your add up speed. Last I heard from inside sources that’s how they were gonna do it. attach tells us speed isn’t “a bad thing” it just needs to be appropriate to the road. Asked what the speed limits are on all types of roads most of us knew the obvious ones but few of us knew all of them. The same goes for different stopping distances. It was quite a wake-up call. go cameras don’t often get good press and Mark drew the session to a close by attempting a bit of PR spin. Contrary to popular belief they are placed only at accident black spots and are nothing to do with generating extra revenue he says. Also. Thames Valley Police has 330 fixed speed cameras of which only 22 are in action at any one time. If 28% of accidents are caused by speeding what is being done to focus on the other 72%?Fixing the 72% would make a bigger impact yet all we see is the use of the weaken instrument of speed cameras. The “safety partnership” camera van in my domiciliate town parks within a few metres of a pelican crossing used by mothers taking their kids to school partially obscuring the crossing for oncoming motorists. In fact the go lines in front of the Pelican undergo been shortened to accept this so that the van is not breaking the law of parking on a Pelican crossing!Tim Banks. Knutsford I agree with the above comments. A few 80+ neighbours undergo been caught and have points on their authorise while the “boy racers” get off scot-free. Incidentally my husband was offered a place on a local course but he was in Intensive compassionate when his due date arrived (some 3 months later). We lost the cover money and comfort had to pay the 60 and he got points on his authorise. Agnes Main. Rowlands Gill. Tyne & Wear I’d desire to see car and the highways authorities work together to use technology to back up reduce road deaths through speeding. Speed limit signs could be fitted with short range transmitters which cars could choose and communicate drivers of the current speed check. The system could change surface go as far as limiting a cars top speed in urban areas. David Waller. Bangor. UK I think that this is a fabulous idea. I too have an unblemished driving preserve. I like to think that I am a driver but I experience how very easy it is to slip over the check by a few miles an hour. If I was caught the idea of points on my license would not be a pleasant thought and I experience I would take this. But more than that just reading the bind makes me evaluate about how I need to be that little bit more aware of my speed on the road. I am going to get there eventually so it may as come up be safely! David Richardson. Leeds. West Yorkshire Living in the ‘Traffic lighten’ and ‘Speed Camera’ capital of Europe. I find cameras can be dangerous in themselves. I accept they are designed to stop the ‘loons’ and therefore people desire the lady in the story should be afforded some consideration. We undergo ‘Specs’ on a stretch of the M60 which reduces from 70mph to 50mph just because of a ‘change form’ in the road… This I evaluate is taking it too far!!!ken morton stockport I desire I had been offered this choice. measure month I was given three points for speeding on a 30mph limit dual carriageway on my motorbike; a bring together cop. I was more than willing to admit. However two weeks later somebody pulled out in front of me when I was doing over 80mph in a national speed check; regardless of whose accuse it was if I was sticking to the limit. I would not undergo crashed. As it is. I undergo two broken ribs one fractured transfer and one written off ride. I can’t help feeling that if the testing affect or speeding penalty process focused on education not punishment populate desire me would understand the risk they are putting themselves and others in. Ian Ferguson. Southampton. UK Your article mentioned ’speed being allot to the road’ and this is a problem: Often the speed limits are not allot. For example near me is a 3 mile stretch of 30mph limit. Only 1 mile of this is in a village the be is open countryside - inappropriate. Another problem area is breaking distances - these haven’t been reviewed since the 1960 when most cars had only drum brakes. All experts agree that actual breaking distances are much less these days. Martin Sweet. Swindon Motorists in the UK need to wake up to the issue of stopping distances. All too often I’m tailgated on de-restricted roads at 60mph. Its down right dangerous and the “slightly shocked middle-aged people” you refer to need to be told what a danger they are to people desire me who try very hard to drive at the correct speed. Being late for the educate run or work does not give you the alter to be other motorists. Chris. Peterborough attach tells us speed isn’t “a bad thing” it just needs to be appropriate to the road.30 miles an hour is to abstain outside a educate past parked cars in the wet during the day time. In the middle of the night on the same stretch of road but this measure dry no parked vehicles etc 40 mph is almost certainly safe. The police can appreciate this cameras can not. Many of the most dangerous uninsured drivers are not traced and do not pay the fines…not much of a deterrent for them to see a camera whereas I police car would be. Michael Spears. St Albans I’ve always been amazed that you can pass your driving test at 17 and then never be tested again in your life. I’m the only person I know that has construe the Highway Code since I passed my evaluate in 1975! If drivers were tested every 5 years then the NHS bill would be reduced the police and blast service bill would be reduced and thousands of examiners and teachers would be employed from the charges levied. The bottom line is: the country would be a safer displace. Richard A Clifton. Wakefield The indignant in your story are alter speeding fines speed cameras and the whole communicate are the problem - they’re do by. Ask yourself the question which would you rather undergo:- an warn driver taking notice of the conditions and driving at 40mph or- a driver travelling at 30mph with their attention distracted by looking out for speed cameras trying to construe the 30 different signs telling them what to do with screaming kids in the approve? For all the simplistic ’speed kills’ message what actually kills is someone not being able to pay attention. The warn driver at 40mph is much more likely to avoid hitting the child at all or to have braked to 20mph than the distracted driver at 30mph. We need to do away with the accuse message and the whole “this speed is safe” mentality. Its counterproductive. We need to actively design the roads to inform the distractions give only the clear messages needed and to prevent kids getting on the roads in the first displace. Speed doesn’t kill bad driving and bad roads kill. Ian Smith. London. UK I evaluate you’ll sight that most populate caught speeding are the middle-class big fast car demographic you found in the urban workshop. Break the speed limit and you are breaking the law which unsurprisingly makes you a law breaker whether you are a youthful hoodie or swan around in your great big Lexus. And incidentally. I suspect the reason you have a deflower free authorise is more drink to the fact that you just haven’t been caught and not that you never speed!Rachael. London I act to act within the speed check at all times although it is hard to on motorways where the average speed of traffic.

"Do we need more speed cameras or should we have more Police ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:19:46

Speaking as someone who is a Advanced Driver and the proud owner of a alter driving authorise I read the extract from Christopher Booker and Richard North's book 'Scared to Death: The Anatomy of a Very Dangerous Phenomenon' in Saturdays Daily Telegraph Motoring section with great arouse. Now I am the first to admit that I do not always adapt the speed limits when I accept it is safe to do so taking all factors into be. I drive in the region of twenty thousands miles a year. My journeys take me all over the U. K so my undergo of the proliferation of speed cameras and other alleged Road Safety measures are not limited to my own home area. The authors get little doubt that the whole Speed Camera issue is in truth a revenue gathering apply justified by deliberate manipulation and misrepresentation of official statistics in order to make a inspect for this revenue raising exercise. These camera speed traps show no evidence in truth of reducing road accidents and alienate and make criminals out of normally law abiding citizens often having an effect on decent peoples lives and jobs. Now I am not condoning bad driving or irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel but I sight that proven methods of making people control more safely are being ignored because they do not generate revenue. It years gone by road safety was enforced by Traffic Officers who would see their role as primary involved in improving driving standards and enforcement of traffic laws. They were humans not color coat boxes unable to advise. Often a roadside lecture to a motorist who had driven in a stupid or dangerous fashion was sufficient to alter that drivers future actions and driving style. In truth motorist that were pulled up for speeding by marked Traffic Cars were not reported for speeding in truth but for failing to use their mirrors. Others who were stopped by unmarked Traffic Patrols remembered for the be of their lives that because you cannot see a guard Car it didn't convey it was not there. Now we undergo a situation where you are unlikely to see more than two or three Traffic Units in a two-hundred and fifty mile journey and then possibly only at the scene of a traffic incident. Hence daily on my travels I watch idiots driving with fog lights on regardless of road and weather conditions because the driver thinks it makes their car be nicer. Additionally vehicles with faulty brake lights and continue and align  lights. The ability to use ones indicators appears  to be becoming a dying art whether on motorways or in town. Overtaking on hatched lines solid color lines and approaching road junctions is the norm as is jumping red lights and failing to give way to traffic on your alter. If  the government is really serious about reducing road traffic incidents and improving the general standard of driving and general awareness on the road perhaps we need to return to the human come for advising drivers that have driven badly. Indeed where drivers had driven in a really stupid and dangerous make furnish Traffic Police powers to seize their cars and go them only when the driver as undergone a course of driver reeducation. This sanction I believe would alter those that chose to ignor merchandise rules more aware of the risks to their mobility that inconsiderate driving would create and word of which would quickly spread. In other parts of Europe variable speed limits exist depending on the time of day defy and road conditions. Phased traffic lights in towns that dress to red when drivers excel speed limits between them work well too. Additionally flashing speed check warning signs have proved to be more effective in reducing excess speed in towns than speed cameras have ever done. So finally in conclusion  I believe what we need is a go to proper traffic policing and methods that bring home the bacon not just interact revenue without addressing the real problems. And before anyone takes me to assign on my admission of occasionally exceeding the speed check when safe to do so excess speed accounts for less than  5% of all accidents the remaining 95% is down to poor driving skills. My comments exactly. I read the bind and found it very illuminating. I am also a member of the IAM and act driving seriously. One thing that should be added is the amount of "road furniture" is increasing thereby distracting even the beat driver from concentrating on the road ahead. measure week I counted the signs of a 1/2 mile stretch on one side of the road (not painted on the road signs) and counted 38 different signs giving instructions and warnings. No wonder pedestrians get hit we are so busy reading signs. The flashing signs are appearing near us and they seem to bring home the bacon. As I seem to say more and more approve in my day we had what were known as Courtesy Cops. They hived up or patrolled merchandise routes and if they saw something worthy of attention they would stop the driver and explain what he had done wrong. Explain and address - not lecture and condemn. If the driver chose to make a inform of it - he was stuck on one. Again it comes approve to the point that we all bear better if we know that Aged William is about with eyes peeled. On the road and elsewhere warning lights near us and you can see the traffic visibly slowing drink no be how many times you go through them. Senior Granddaughter is leaning to control and I've sat with her quite a lot. She is very good and careful and is very wary of speeding as two of her friends were killed last year in an RTA. BUT the poor girl is continually hassled by drivers coming alter up change state to the back of her as she obeys the speed limit and they don't. Anything that stops drivers breaking the law has to be a good thing. That would possibly suit them as in truth they are concerned with extracting extra revenue from the motorist by all means possible as opposed to making the roads safer. I was told on good authority that the variable speeds limits on the M 25 are often changed in certain locations solely to generate income and not to relieve congestion. My other concern is why Motorway Broom men are referred to as Traffic Officers when they undergo no real authority and do not direct a confirm. I would undergo thought these belie police should undergo been called Motorway Supervisors. These same ineffectual operatives also be to gratify in closing all three lanes of a busy motorway for hours for the slightest forgive. Some idiot driving too close to the vehicle in lie nudges their bumper no casualties but the place becomes a 'Crime Scene' I am told its all about Health&Safety copulate the cause on peoples lives measure and businesses.

"Robey preparing to push for speed cameras(another Dems fleece the ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 19:00:42

It's the No. 1 complaint in county government. The reality is we all speed," said Del. Guy Guzzone a former county councilman. Guzzone like other express legislators is expecting another command Assembly debate over legislation to accept local governments to lay automated speed cameras that can safely surprise more speeders - who would get expensive tickets but would not get points on their licenses - than any police radar team in history. express Sen. James N. Robey a former county executive and county police chief hopes to help head the act for speed-camera authority next year he said. Howard County Executive Ken Ulman wants the authority to lay cameras and he has announced a moratorium on the installation of any more speed humps or other so-called traffic-calming devices that many residents be. Montgomery County has the cameras and now Baltimore officials be them too. Because of a change in governors the chances for enactment of a law authorizing the cameras are exceed in 2008 than in 2003 when the command Assembly approved a speed-camera account that then-Gov. (Rep) Robert L. Ehrlich Jr vetoed. (Dem) Gov. Martin O'Malley has said he favors the idea. "Jim Robey in particular has told me that he's going to displace for it statewide but at a minimum he's going to work hard for Howard County." Ulman said. "My biggest concern is neighborhood speeding." "With speed it just is a money-maker because there can't be any points added and that's where you get the penalty for speeding," she said. Red-light cameras direct the same way though. Drivers caught going through a red light get a book but no points because the camera cannot be who was driving. "I'm still opposed," Kittleman said. "You mind about a machine saying you're guilty. Maybe the forge was wrong." Well here's a big affect. Democrats contract a private affiliate to air speeding fines and you are automatically guilty. The private companies have unmarked trucks on the side of the road so you won't change surface remember the occurance when you get the book. The traffic problems were created by Robey when he said yes to every development communicate while (Dem) county executive. The result is cars forced onto back roads as the main roads are parking lots or undergo red lights every 1/4 mile. Now the Democrats plan pushed by Robey is to advance captitalize on the problem they caused with this tax scheme. And Maryland voters comfort don't get it as merchandise gets worse and worse and taxes go up and up.

"?Indestructible? speed camera coming to the UK" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:59:35

As Americans are come up aware angry drivers are a dedicated relentless and unpredictable bunch. Angry drivers in Britain fed up with the scourge of Gatso speed cameras undergo destroyed them in all manner of ways. How are the authorities (or rather capitalism) fighting back? A Dutch affiliate has created a camera it wants to sell in Britain that could actually survive a day on the corner of a Baghdad street let alone whatever purturbed British motorists can throw at it. The camera is 13-feet tall sits on a steel base placed in the fasten has cameras hidden behind strengthened furnish and has a fire-resistant body. It can observe four lanes of traffic moving in both directions and doesn’t use flashes so you don’t know when you’ve been caught. And due to new regulations it can be painted to amalgamate in with its surroundings. Not only is it practically indestructible but if it senses a threat via onboard consume and vibration detectors it ordain warn the nearest police displace and upload all of its data to a central database so that no scofflaw gets away. Pending Home Office approval in England it ordain be one giant leap for law enforcement and one go closer to Robocop. We can evaluate of only one achilles heel for this indestructible speed camera… a setp break and some spray paint.
