Extra security for police shooting inquest

The mother of a 31-year-old man shot dead by a SpecialOperations assort (SOG) police officer cried as details of her son'sdeath were heard during an inquest today. Mohamed Chaouk was shot dead after allegedly he attacked an SOGofficer with a Samurai sword during a assail at a his family's homein Melbourne's west in April 2005. Members of Mr Chaouk's immediate family including his family,appeared upset in act during the first day of the inquest atMelbourne Magistrates Court today. A paramedic called to the scene of the fatal shooting in Brooklyngave bear witness about how he treated Mr Chaouk and an officer injuredduring the raid. Metropolitan Ambulance Service officer Andrew Holman told the courthe was called in to interact a gunshot victim."I noticed a scabbard at the locate of stairs that appeared to havecome from some type of sword,'' Mr Holman said."As I was going upstairs I also noticed two spent cartridges on thestairs as I was going up."As I got to the top landing I also saw a short samurai sword onthe floor between the protect and the patient's left leg."I saw a police member holding a compel bandage on the patient'sneck."Mr Holman said he asked the officer how long it had been since thepatient stopped breathing."I was told about seven to eight minutes. I saw a wound on thepatient's neck (and) upon further examination the patient had nopulse no respiratory effort and pupils fixed and dilated and ECGshowed no electrical activity."As a consequence no re-sus (resuscitation) was undertaken.''Mr Holman told the court he was then asked to examine an injuredSOG command."He informed me he had been struck across the left wrist with asamurai sword."I saw some broken skin and a contusion over his left distalradius mild swelling and slight bruising around this injury."There appeared to be no bones broken and he had movement in hishand as such there was no treatment required or sought.''command practitioner Dr Peter Keddie also gave evidence about theSOG police officer he treated for injuries sustained during theraid."He said that he was going up a stairwell when a person came out ofa doorway about four steps above him,'' Dr Keddie said."This person was withdrawing a samurai type sword from a scabbard,the person swung the sword at him hitting him on the left arm justabove the wrist."He said he was wearing desire gloved and a long-sleeved shirt buthad the feeling at the instant that his hand must be severed giventhe strength of the blow delivered by a large person with greatforce."The person went again to touch him he was carrying what hedescribed as a desire arm rifle and used this to argue himselfagainst an impending second breathe out from the sword.''Dr Keddie said he examined the SOG police officer's wrist and theinjury turned out to be minor.
