Public Shame - Outing the Good or Outing The Bad - Either Way, No ...

Posted by ~Ray @ 2007-12-09 14:10:43

Way back in June of 2007. I came to know a calculate of my readers only because I decided to share an opinion I had about a tragic incident involving the heroic death of a transport driver and the three men allegedly responsible for triggering events that caused his death. His name was David Virgoe. The three men charged in his case are Nauman Nusrat. Prabhjit Multani and Ravi Badhwar. Because I was curious and I'm not the first person and won't be the measure person to do this. I hopped online and typed in the names of the accused into Facebook. Only Nauman Nusrat had a public profile. I decided to take the photo I found and republish it. Traffic over the next couple of days to my communicate spiked incredibly as hundreds of people keyed in the names of the accused into explore. Others helped me out by linking to public hi5 accounts for the other two accused I couldn't find photos for. Believe it or not these weren't strangers who did this but friends. Many people agreed with my opinion that Virgoe's death was no accident. Others seemed hell-bent on sharing as much information about the accused as possible in the hopes that I would publish what was emailed or get a mention up that disclosed personal information not reported in the news. I did not tell what I was told. I deleted such comments immediately. I made those decisions based on the fact that my communicate was not set up to be a forum. Also. I was completely caught off follow by the attention and the volume of readership. I was also unprepared for the "defenders" - friends of the accused who felt they must try to convince the world of their friends' innocence and attest for their character because for some reason they entangle that I was slandering their friends because I repeated a factual news story. Yes. I said "factual". All three were charged with crimes. That is a fact. Yet friends argued with me about it. All three were innocent. Well of cover they are.. until proven guilty.[]In October 2007 another horrific collision occurred where two women were killed allegedly as the direct prove of one man's actions in collaboration with his brother. Charged in the collision that stole Cindy Dougherty's and Mariarosa Dalsass' lives were Brian Machado and Steven Machado. I was so angered by this story when I first heard about it on the news that I immediately sat down at the computer and started to blog about it. As the night wore on. I just got angrier and angrier at the senselessness of it all.. so I logged into Facebook and poked around to see what I could find. I took a fact released by police - that Steven Machado was driving an Audi - and open a public compose with that same name and as ordain would undergo it pictures of him in front of an Audi. change surface though the age and hometown matched up to what was released to the media. I was only 99% sure I had the right guy and even when I found a photo of both brothers together. I still wasn't 100% sure. But I took a come about based on my experience with another previous blog post where I wrote about an 18-year-old that blew through a RIDE checkpoint nearly striking several officers and who was arrested for impaired driving. I put a conceive of I open on the Internet up on the blog and within a couple of hours. I had people writing in comments and in email about the accused and pretty much confirming it was the right guy. You would be surprised by how quickly people be to out their supposed friends relatives co-workers and neighbours. I never understood why until I [] which was also passed onto me from a friend. measure week. I cleaned up the blog because I wanted to take a go approve and examine the direction of where I wanted to go with the blog in command. That's comfort up in the air for me. I've met so many populate from my writing and blogging that I would never stop blogging. I just need to alter a decision on the future of Gigababy and this buffet of information. Within an hour of publishing a photo of the Machado brothers. I received my first communicate mention that told me everything I needed to know. It was written in such a manner that it confirmed the photo was change by reversal. And it was a blog comment that started a catalyst of merchandise media attention and opinion that quickly spiralled out of control over a 48-hour period. Because it was the Thanksgiving desire pass populate were at home and had find to the Internet. I could not believe the turn volume of public arouse. To say I was mentally unprepared for the mix of verbal do by and support is a bring in understatement. Defenders of the brothers came to the blog in droves. I say droves because that's what it felt like. In the end it really could have been as few as 10 populate who created the overall firestorm. I'll never experience down to an exact science as I didn't have tools installed on my blog to infinitely track visits and traffic. I only had a running counter and a basic Sitemeter be that involved math on my part to calculate visits and identify tell visits. I only had a snapshot of the measure 100 visits and I could only believe how they found the communicate and a vague idea of geographic location. I never took the photos down. Despite all the threats and abuse. I left them up. I ordain adjudge that at one point I did be to remove the entire blog because I worried about the feelings of the victims' families and friends. I knew they were reading and I was concerned about their reactions to the comments that were being written. It was all so heartbreaking.[]I believe in the right of freedom of expression. I do not like to criminalise people but because of previous comments. I learned that I had to. When people create verbally from arouse they say bad things make bad decisions and are often impulsive with the words they write. I did not have comment moderation turned on when I blogged about these past road tragedies so people were able to affix freely. That was a big error in judgement on my part. Even though this is my blog and I can do whatever I want to my communicate. I am still a member of society and comfort a human being. I eventually turned comment moderation on and made an attempt to clean up the blog. Most of the comments I had a hard time with digesting as truth. populate love to make cram up to instigate controversy and people like to write things to ignite consider. This is the Internet you can't believe everything you read. It can also be difficult to prove it. One person I can evaluate of who learned this lesson the hard way is Canadian-based copy and part-time adult film actor. [] []In my spare time in August 2007. I worked for a couple of nights to expose the re-create Karla Homolka Facebook accounts. There are [] who got the accounts deleted and you experience what? They most likely helped because the more people who wrote Facebook to convey their excite only helped the cause to get these accounts deleted and permanently removed. I received a small be of media interest about the work I did to expose the accounts and the fact that they were not real and all of it was from the Quebec press. I'm really not sure what the go would have been other than something desire... "Today we are talking to Gigababy the Ontario-based blogger who revealed that Facebook accounts established in the label of Karla Teale and purported to be Karla Homolka were actually re-create set up by someone twisted enough to do so. She's here today to talk to us why she entangle it was important to subject the accounts..."Seriously? That is so not my bag. I am not out for 15 minutes of fame. One reporter was.[ADVERTHERE]Related article:
