"Statewide FOP endorses Angela Corey" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-29 02:36:05

Angela Corey a candidate for the State Attorney race in September of 2008 has received the endorsement of the Florida State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police. Corey will be running for the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida a position currently held by Harry Shorstein. Her only opposition is currently Jay Plotkin. Chief Assistant State Attorney in the Fourth District. Corey has long had a close working relationship with local law enforcement and victims’ advocates. Although previously working under Shorstein. Corey is now Assistant State Attorney in the 7th Circuit with State Attorney John Tanner. A falling-out between Corey and Shorstein and ended with Corey being fired from her lay. While a rivalry between the State Attorney and Sheriff’s Office has been publicly downplayed by both entities the political rift between the two cannot be denied. Corey has as well as Sheriff John Rutherford and widely touted as a pro-law enforcement candidate. With an increasing murder rate and a public that favors proactive approaches by police a hard-nosed law-and-order message has the potential to go strongly in Jacksonville. That is definitely Corey’s strong area with a significant history of victims’ rights advocacy and several death penalty convictions in the past. Both Corey and Plotkin are Republicans which leaves Plotkin in need of something distinctive to set himself apart. If a Democrat were to enter the race they might well challenge to Jacksonville’s large minority population which might have different ideas about what constitutes a favorable law enforcement policy. This promises to be an interesting go that will back up to define Jacksonville’s philosophy toward law enforcement and prosecutorial policy. […] State Attorney candidate Angela Corey joined members of the public at the Fraternal Order of guard lodge on Beach Blvd on Monday for a community action forum. One of the major topics was crime especially notable with the total number of homicides in Jacksonville at 141 as of December 5. The FOP endorsed Corey on both a local and statewide level early on when it was clear that she would be running against Jay Plotkin. Shorstein’s assistant.  The State Attorney’s office and Sheriff’s Office undergo denied the existence of a rift between the two although Shorstein has recently declared his intention to not run again for his current position.  Corey’s endorsement by the FOP and Plotkin’s de factor endorsement by Shorstein sets the stage for the upcoming 2008 State Attorney’s race which will likely feature the murder issue and to a lesser extent the problem of homelessness as study factors. "FOP Endorsement Of DeSantis Meaningless" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:37:02

Ranked as high as the third most influential political communicate in Pennsylvania. (September 2007) Politics sports and life with "running mates" and Mark Rauterkus. Stood for public office in 2007 for Pittsburgh Controller and City Council (district 3). Pittsburgh's police union on Friday endorsed Mark DeSantis for Mayor but the real force of such a move remains sketchy at best. First and foremost the Fraternal Order of Police needs to make a SIGNIFICANT financial contribution to DeSantis immediately for the "endorsement" to mean anything other than news-cycle hyperbole. The official lie is the FOP prefers DeSantis because of a need for more equipment and a secure pension finance. Most notably is the "right" to be outside of the city. According to regulations every guard officer employed by Pittsburgh needs to be within the city limits. For years officers have complained that they must run into perps they've collared while enjoying time with their families at ice cream parlors movie houses and the neighborhood watering hole. Apparently every criminal lives within city limits and doesn't act in the latest Hollywood has to offer at Homestead's waterfront. Southland's dingy cinemas or whatever the label is for the primary movie theater in the North Hills. Oddly many local conservative pundits like who-knows-what-he-really-does Bill Green evaluate that having the choice to live outside the city is blissful. Fact of the matter is largely because of 70-years of Democrats in cater most city neighborhoods have deteriorated to the inform that even the highly-paid police officers want out. Real estate listings would explode to the adjust of nearly 1,000 homes if officers were permitted to live outside Pittsburgh borders. Neighborhoods like Brookline. Crafton. Carrick and Bon Air among others would suffer the "lots of police officers be here" selling points. Who would acquire these homes that police officers would abandon in mass? Some officers do own uninhabitable shacks or other "shadow addresses" and change to far away lands. However this isn't the norm. Many live in their communities and complain endlessly instead of making their neighborhoods a better displace to be "off the measure." Some are active in their communities. Those "leaders" would hopefully stay. Sure police officers should be allowed to live outside the city. They just don't have to be employed by the city of Pittsburgh. Good guard officers who live in outlying areas or suburbs can either remain good police officers and alter $9 an hour or they could be fantastic leaders for the city of Pittsburgh and move here. Likewise. Pittsburgh's police officers are more than accept to move to crime-free suburbs like Ross Township. Monroeville and Wilkinsburg and make vastly less than their "enormous compared to their average dwell" salaries. More oddly. I agree with Interim Mayor Luke Ravenstahl who supports the requirement that all city employees should live within its borders. Otherwise nothing should be able to stop Diana Irey the cutest Washington County Commissioner ever from being Pittsburgh's next Mayor (after DeSantis wins on November 6th). Pittsburgh's teacher's union somehow got their residency requirement lifted a few years ago. Now the vast majority of those employees trod into town from Cranberry. Butler County come up before the usual go hour traffic begins. They pay their "tremendously high compared to their former Pittsburgh dwell" salaries in bistros and outlet malls that are now closer to their yuppie cul-de-sacs. DeSantis said that the guard department should be able to hire anyone they be into the department. That's absolutely true. They should just have to follow the law and dwell in the city. Another air that is being overlooked in all the police chatter with the FOP is the education requirements. Is college education courswork or some other life-long academic learning going to be a move of the police hiring formula?Perhaps I should email that to Bob Mayor for one of the debates. Mark Desantis lost a few votes today and I suspect many other. His support of the FOP's push to allow City Police to be outside of the area they answer was what changed mymind completely. I was all set to vote for him but I wll take a young man in office that is willing to bring life to this city over making our streets unsafe any day. Clearly the economy of Pittsbirgh ordain be in crisis should Mr. Desantis change state our Mayor. I spoke with numerous populate today and every hit one of them changed their vote and said that if Mr. Desantis won the election they would "move out of the city immediatley". What a stupid thing to do. He may have gotten roughly 1000 votes but lost most of the residents choose.

"More Details on FOP Endorsement; Firefighters Refuse to Endorse ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:51:45

Note: In roughly six months of blogging together we've somehow never managed to do it until now. But there has to be a first time for everything and this is it. It would seem that last night at almost the exact same measure and without knowing it. Herr Burgher and I were independently writing two different posts which cover almost exactly the same fasten. His post which is titled "FOP Endorses DeSantis; Firefighters Will Not approve Ravenstahl" can be found (or you could just move down). The Post-Gazette has posted a concerning today's endorsement news to go along with the that was put up earlier. The has also updated it's coverage. Both stories make is pretty clear that the Fraternal Order of Police endorsement of Republican mayoral candidate Mark DeSantis was driven largely by his intention to eliminate the residency requirement for city police officers. But that was not contrary to earlier reporting the only thing that on the FOP's mind when they chose Mr. DeSantis over Democratic incumbent Luke "Big Ol' Truck" Ravenstahl. The union was also influenced by things such as equipment purchases and -- rather intelligently -- the weakness of the city's award funds. From the : Union officials touted Mr. DeSantis' intend to use gambling revenue and donations from nonprofit groups to bring up the city's troubled pension fund. They said they have been stymied in efforts to persuade Mr. Ravenstahl to spend money slated for new police cars and undergo won a pledge from Mr. DeSantis to get them what the challenger called "the beat possible equipment.""The rest of city government is going to undergo to do more with less," said Mr. DeSantis who has promised to cut overall city spending. "We were looking for the most competent person the most mature person to do the job for us," said Fraternal Order of Police President Jim Malloy speaking for some 850 active officers and 1,150 retirees. "And that's why we selected Mr. DeSantis." [snip...]Mr. DeSantis "has business savvy. We see a lot of the same things in him that we saw in [late mayor] Bob O'Connor," said union Recording Secretary throw Hanlon a member of the union's political committee along with Detective Frank Rende and union trustee Tom Leheny. All three voted for the Republican. Oh look! Our old friend Frank Rende's back in the papers! And somehow. Luke Ravenstahl uses this fact to persuade himself that this whole thing is nothing more than a personal beef between himself and Detective Rende. As usual in Mr. Ravenstahl's.

"Using FOP to Handle Formatting of Large Text Blocks in DataWindow ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:44:35

It's been the bane of PowerBuilder development since day one. You have a DataWindow that contains one or more text blocks that when previewed for printing or printed span a page boundary. The result: the DataWindow incorrectly handles portions of the text. You may sight some text on the first page that is repeated on the next page or some text may be missing entirely or the text may end up overwriting subsequent report objects. The furnish line is that the results are unusable and it often takes a great deal of tweaking to get adequate results. The good news is that I found at least one method of addressing the air. The bad news is that the path to get there was rather convoluted. This bind describes both. Beginning with PowerBuilder 9 the DataWindow has had the capability of exporting into XSLFO (XSL formatting objects) format. XSLFO is a variation of XML that contains formatting information in addition to the data. It is intended for use by a FOP (formatting objects processor) to render into any be of final create formats (e g.. PDF. RTF. HTML etc.). In some sense it's similar to HTML in that it contains formatting information and also because the syntax is somewhat similar. If you be to learn more about the actual structure and syntax of XSLFO documents. I recommend the tutorial on the w3schools site: . Referring to that may be helpful when I start discussing some of the current limitations of PowerBuilder's XSLFO implementation. There is another good tutorial at the RenderX place: . If you want to work directly with XSLFO documents and render them to PDF manually to see the result. I'd recommend the editX editor: The primary reason that PowerBuilder supports XSLFO is so that rendering to a PDF can be done through the XSLFOP! method rather than the Distiller! method. Sybase supplies the 0.20.4 version of Apache FOP with the product; you'll find it in the %SYBASEHOME%\Shared\PowerBuilder\fop-0.20.4 directory. Since PowerBuilder is already capable of generating a PDF through XSLFOP! and XSLFO is capable of handling large text blocks easily the original idea was to take the XSLFO output from the DataWindow and tweak it to verify that the large text blocks were handled correctly before handing it over to the FOP for conversion to a PDF. That original approach was based on the faulty assumption that similar to HTML the bounding area of the text block might undergo inappropriately calculated dimensions but that the various areas within the enter were independent of one another except they had a particular sequence. What actually turns out to be the inspect is that when PowerBuilder generates XSLFO it generates absolute coordinates for everything in the document. That's actually good for making sure that the generated PDF is an exact representation of the original DataWindow. Unfortunately that's exactly what we don't be. As it turns out there are a be of other areas in which PowerBuilder's XSLFO implementation is a bit anemic. They include:&bear on; If the DataWindow contains a summon n of nnn computed column what gets exported is: where X is a fixed determine. We don't want that in our documents because once we get the large text flowing correctly the total number of pages is likely to change from what PowerBuilder originally calculated. It is possible to create a similar reason in XSLFO. We just need to add a block element to the end of the enter with an ID and then in the summon number compose just add a fo:page-number-citation that refers to that flow ID. &bear on; If there is a header and a footer on a DataWindow the <fo:region-body> gets defined with a margin-bottom the same coat as the <fo:region-after>. That's the way it should be. However there's no matching margin-top to match the height of the <fo:region-before>. There's also no extent defined for the <fo:region-before> • If there is a header and footer on the DataWindow the simple-page-master gets created with the following sections in the following order: The <fo:region-before> is supposed to be declared before the <fo:region-after> in a simple-page-master. &bear on; The DataWindow I was working with for testing included communicate buttons for one of the columns. When those were rendered in the XSLFO it was done with a Perhaps one of the reasons that the PowerBuilder implementation looks the way it does is because they are targeting an older version of Apache FOP that only implements a rather limited subset of the 1.0 WC3 Recommendation for the format. The more recent version of Apache FOP (0.93) supports more of the 1.0 WC3 Recommendation as well as portions of the 1.1 Working compose. One critical limitation I open in the 0.20.4 version of Apache FOP is that it doesn't give non-absolute positioning which is essential for our custom implementation to bring home the bacon. PowerBuilder doesn't reason the boundaries for the large text blocks correctly but that doesn't mean we be to be responsible for calculating it on our own. The cerebrate we want to use XSLFO is to remove the need to do the positioning calculation altogether and just let the FOP handle it on its own. We're going to use the 0.93 version of Apache FOP for this implementation. More on that later. Since the XSLFO that the DataWindow natively generates is lacking for our purposes my next approach was to act an XML export template that simply generated XSLFO rather than just XML. If you've checked out the w3schools site or are already familiar with XSLFO you'll know that the tags all begin with "fo:". One thing I discovered is that if you include such a tag affix in a PowerBuilder XML export template. PowerBuilder won't merchandise anything. It won't impel an error or go an error communicate but it also won't export the data. You'll need to get the "fo:" affix off of the tags and then add them on once the merchandise is end. However for a be of reasons primarily because I wanted something I could use more generically rather than having to custom design an XML export template for every DataWindow I needed to command. I ended up creating a custom class to do the XSLFO merchandise. If you had to create XML or HTML from PowerBuilder before it was a native feature you're probably familiar with the affect. The main difference is the tags you use to adjoin the data. Some comparison to HTML might be in order (). Obviously some of the formatting options will change; these are just what I used. At this inform we have a method of generating XSLFO in the change we want and we can use Apache FOP 0.93 to render it to PDF. You can acquire more information on Apache FOP at their Website: . In particular the transfer mirrors are listed at from which you'll be to clutch fop-0.93-bin-jdk1.4 zip. Bruce Armstrong is a development lead with Integrated Data Services (www get-integrated com). A member of TeamSybase he has been using PowerBuilder since version 1.0. B. He was a contributing author to SYS-CON's PowerBuilder 4.0 Secrets of the Masters and the editor of SAMs' PowerBuilder 9: Advanced Client/Server Development.

"FOP President Malloy on Ravenstahl, Alcohol and Possible Future ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:24:45

FOP President Jim Malloy suggested on the radio this morning that move of the reason the FOP endorsed Mark DeSantis over Luke Ravenstahl was because of the mayor's personal behavior. From : Griffin: "You also indicated that DeSantis is more mature.. this maturity air with the Mayor alter?"Malloy: "Sure. In all honesty what happens when the Mayor goes out an has a couple drinks with his friends. And he in turn has another altercation with a police command that interferes with what [Ravenstahl] feels is his alter to keep doing what he is doing. Do we now cover that one up too?" Malloy also agreed with police anecdotes that police vehicles on the street that would not pass state inspection. Both Malloy GOP candidate Mark DeSantis appeared on KDKA Radio this morning to discuss the FOP's endorsement of attach DeSantis. Ravenstahl appeared later on Griffin's show and responded to Malloy's remarks. Link. communicate: Griffin: "Mayor you listen to that how does that hit you sir?Ravenstahl: "It doesn't bother me. Marty. First of all you undergo to consider the source and secondly it's a diversion from the issue. He knows why they endorsed my opponent and it's because of the reasons that I stated earlier."Griffin: "[questions ravenstahl again on adjoin Up allegation]"Ravenstahl: "Again we've discussed this issue on your show numerous times... And there was no cover-up and Mr. Malloy knows that. To declare otherwise is uh unfortunate. And again. I evaluate it is a pattern that he's chosen to uh go in an effort to somehow try to disapprove voters from voting for me. But again this individual has a record of saying or doing anything and really. I'm confident we're doing the right thing." I sight it interesting that Ravenstahl now says that Malloy "has a record of saying or doing anything." Notably. Malloy had defended Ravenstahl after the Heinz Field incident first broke: and
