Note: In roughly six months of blogging together we've somehow never managed to do it until now. But there has to be a first time for everything and this is it. It would seem that last night at almost the exact same measure and without knowing it. Herr Burgher and I were independently writing two different posts which cover almost exactly the same fasten. His post which is titled "FOP Endorses DeSantis; Firefighters Will Not approve Ravenstahl" can be found (or you could just move down).
The Post-Gazette has posted a concerning today's endorsement news to go along with the that was put up earlier. The has also updated it's coverage. Both stories make is pretty clear that the Fraternal Order of Police endorsement of Republican mayoral candidate Mark DeSantis was driven largely by his intention to eliminate the residency requirement for city police officers. But that was not contrary to earlier reporting the only thing that on the FOP's mind when they chose Mr. DeSantis over Democratic incumbent Luke "Big Ol' Truck" Ravenstahl. The union was also influenced by things such as equipment purchases and -- rather intelligently -- the weakness of the city's award funds. From the :
Union officials touted Mr. DeSantis' intend to use gambling revenue and donations from nonprofit groups to bring up the city's troubled pension fund. They said they have been stymied in efforts to persuade Mr. Ravenstahl to spend money slated for new police cars and undergo won a pledge from Mr. DeSantis to get them what the challenger called "the beat possible equipment.""The rest of city government is going to undergo to do more with less," said Mr. DeSantis who has promised to cut overall city spending.
"We were looking for the most competent person the most mature person to do the job for us," said Fraternal Order of Police President Jim Malloy speaking for some 850 active officers and 1,150 retirees. "And that's why we selected Mr. DeSantis." [snip...]Mr. DeSantis "has business savvy. We see a lot of the same things in him that we saw in [late mayor] Bob O'Connor," said union Recording Secretary throw Hanlon a member of the union's political committee along with Detective Frank Rende and union trustee Tom Leheny. All three voted for the Republican.
Oh look! Our old friend Frank Rende's back in the papers! And somehow. Luke Ravenstahl uses this fact to persuade himself that this whole thing is nothing more than a personal beef between himself and Detective Rende. As usual in Mr. Ravenstahl's.
